The newly discovered lab grown solitaire is currently referred to as the “cultured diamond.” Just as the cultured pearl changed the face of the pearl industry, the lab grown solitaire is following in the same footsteps. There is much controversy perpetrated by the fact that the lab grown solitaire is listed in the Federal Trade Commission Jewelry Guide as a “cultured diamond.” some international diamond, jewelry and pearl trade associations are upset by this reference stating that the term is deceptive for describing a laboratory made diamond.
A cultured solitaire is one that is determined to have aid in the growth process in terms of forming the actual solitaire straight through a carbon crystallization process. Cultured pearls are formed a similar manner in that the bead is located inside an object imitating that of the natural growth process of a pearl in the sea. Either way both terms mean that the gems were produced straight through a growth process that emulates the natural biological growth process straight through earth elements. The Federal Trade Commission allows the use of the term “cultured diamonds” with determined specifications indicated in the guidelines of how the term should defined and used.
Diamond
Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission sees this position as a work in strengthen due to the fact that there is insufficient evidence supporting the opinion that the term is deceptive and misleading to the consumer. It is a fact that the lab grown solitaire cannot be grand from the diamonds mined by natural process. However, solitaire moguls such as De Beers are opposed to the technique of being able to grow diamonds on interrogate and pass it off as deceptive and equivalent to the originate of the cubic zirconia which does not collate in ability to the lab grown diamond. This seems to be partially due in fact that the lab grown solitaire surpasses expectations of producing a man made solitaire with the exact qualities of a natural diamond. Others such as the cubic zirconia contain a determined inferior ability to the natural diamond.
For these reasons the term “cultured diamond” is being challenged by many international trade associations while the Federal Trade Commission searches for more facts that supports the claims of deception by these associations. At the present time the Commission has decided that there is insufficient evidence to sustain the use of the term “cultured diamonds” as deceptive or unfair, and qualifies the term as usable based on these conclusions.
For the time being the bottom line is that the Federal Trade Commission warrants that lab grown or man made solitaire manufacturers are allowed to use the term “cultured diamonds” in their advertisements and promotions. The definite guidelines under the term “cultured diamonds” state the lab grown solitaire manufacturers must enumerate facts somewhere in the promotion that makes clear to the buyer that the solitaire is precisely laboratory grown.
