Elk ivory is the rarest jewelry component in the world. Often referred to
as the “pearl of the west”, elk ivory has been found among artifacts
5,000 years old. Native Americans often used elk teeth as a ornamental element
in jewelry and clothing. The first confirmed elk ivory ornaments in the U.S.
were unearthed at the Fort Yates archeological dig in south central North Dakota,
along the Missouri river, dating back almost 530 years. Elk teeth are still
used in ornament today and can make a unique, one of a kind jewelry piece.
If you are imagining a string of teeth with holes drilled straight through them and
strung on a piece of leather, you haven’t seen a contemporary, well-made
piece of elk tooth jewelry. “Elk teeth can be a gorgeous centerpiece
for rings, pendants, belt buckles, cuff links, bracelets, and more with stunning
results” says Sarah Buckles Larner, an elk tooth and high-priced stone
custom jewelry designer in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. “Just like a
traditional jewelry setting using high-priced stones, you can use elk teeth with
metals like sterling silver, 14K yellow or white gold, or a combination of
those metals to generate a lovely piece.”

Elk hunting is big enterprise in Colorado. Elk are abundant; therefore hunting
season yields plenty of material for a designer or elk tooth jewelry enthusiast.
Sarah’s customers range from hunters with their own elk teeth to clients
that just appreciate the unique style of an elk tooth pendant or ring. “If
a buyer brings in their own elk teeth and they are not already cleaned,
they are considered boiled, cleaned, and then considered polish of all the rough
edges and buffed to a pearl-like finish. Then they are ready to use”
Once the elk ivory tooth is polished, the color and highlights are unique
to each tooth. Depending on the shape and the polish, the colors range from
a milky white ivory color to dark chocolate brown. When the teeth are polished
it may give you a best idea of the type of jewelry that you would like to
have created. You can use a single tooth to generate a ring, a pendant or a money
clip while a matched pair of teeth can be put in a belt buckle, a silver and
gold bracelet or cuff links.

Baby and Children’s Jewelry Gifts – customary or Modern?
One important fact I’ve learned is that everyone has separate taste in jewelry. Often, population want original jewelry for babies, but are prepared to try more contemporary jewelry for older girls and teenagers. Grandparents, in my experience, seem to prefer to buy original baby bracelets, baby bangles and baby brooches for their baby granddaughters. For older children, grandparents generally, might choose gold bracelets and earrings, gemset jewelry and pearls as in children’s earrings, bracelets and necklaces. Some Aunties, friends and Mothers often even buy boys’ jewelry for their baby boys, which is a new trend, taking off quite rapidly.
But as a baby and children’s jewelry retailer, it would be unwise to not include a range of quirky, contemporary, colourful and cute items for those who like it, as I actually do. I call it baby bling and toddler trinkets. It photographs beautifully, with it’s colourful crystals and enamelling and looks gorgeous on little girls. Currently, the extreme baby bling on the site would be the 9ct gold rabbit stud earrings. These have a high level of cuteness as baby earrings. We also have the 9ct gold baby stud earrings for the more original tastes – the gleam of gold on a tiny lobe is hard to beat. Alongside the rabbits, we have excellent sterling silver butterfly earrings for babies and children, dragonfly earrings, bee earrings, ladybugs in engaging enamelled red, astonishing on little girls. We have sparkling crystal and sterling silver hearts, tiny sufficient for a baby but also the excellent children’s earrings.
Gold Bracelet
The opening of the gift-giving tends to have a bearing on our choices. A baby Christening gift or Baptism gift might be a pearl necklace with a pearl cross, a silver baby charm anklet with a sterling silver cross, a pearl baby anklet with attached angel charm, or our gorgeous Austrian crystal, pearl and rose quartz anklet for older babies and little girls. For a birthday or Christmas gift, the selection is more contemporary such as our engaging cupcake earrings for babies and little girls – they are sterling silver with enamelling and very cute. Then we have the black, white and yellow sterling silver penguin children’s earrings, the engaging pink and blue flower earrings, tiny sufficient for the tiniest baby. Also in this category would be the striped bee earrings, the sterling silver bumble bee earrings, and the gold plated sterling silver honey bee earrings. And of policy the butterfly earrings in gold, silver, pink crystals and blue crystals which look astonishing on. All these earrings are made especially for children, with short rods and firm back-nuts. Also in this category are the hoop earrings, gold and silver sleeper earrings and the butterflies on hoops. All very high on the cuteness scale.
Baby bracelets and small children’s bracelets are also available in this category. The contemporary flower charm bracelets, hand enamelled in Italy, the ladybug bracelets, which match the ladybug earrings, the mauvey-enamelled bear charm anklet and the flower/bear charm bracelet, all made in Italy on sterling silver rolo bracelets, are the extreme in contemporary children’s jewelry. Other contemporary bracelets for babies and children are our zoo anklet with nature’s critters as charms, our particular pink flower bracelet, and our great red and yellow flower charm bracelet, recently declared the extreme in gorgeous children’s jewelry, by a friend who loves original baby and children’s jewelry. The favorite children’s charm anklet with a bounty of selection in charms would fall into this category though of course, charm bracelets have been favorite for generations, but are currently popularly revived thanks to Thomas Sabo, Pandora, Links of London and Tiffany.
Anklets, gold, silver and pearl, also fall into this category.
